I am also the author of "Last Stand at Old man's Creek" which is about the battle of Stillmans Run and I mention Indian Creek in the aftermath of Stillmans Run. I always felt that the Indian Creek Story would make a great screen play. The story says a lot about white and Indian relations. The war of 1812 and the Black Hawk War were pivitol in American history and seriously overlooked.

Yes, I have my granfather's book that he gave to my Dad in 1940. The manuscript is my favorite as it is by them although a little rough to read in spots. Our family has been to Blue Mounds, Wi. to the site of the fort where they were returned. Cindy Downs the president of the Blue Mounds Area Historical Society does a great job. Dora

Have you read the book on the Indian Creek Massacre by Scanlan? I also have a copy of a publication (somewhere in my books) that was sent to me by one of your relatives. There is also a lot of information on the Indian Creek incident to be found on the Lincoln Net web site.

correction, I meant some have the date as 21st of May and we believe it is the 20th of May, 1832. Dora

 Indian Creek Massacre 1832
« Result #6 on Dec 3, 2009, 4:56pm »

I am new to this site and have found your comments and articles interesting. My great Grandmother was Rachel Hall Munson. Her sister was Sylvia Hall Horn. I have been to the site of the massacre in little Shabbona park near Ottawa, Il. As a child we went there with our grandfather Elliott Munson along with our Mom and Dad (Floyd Munson). We would drink the cool spring water and try to imagine the events of that day. I have been there several times as an adult and have taken our children there also. Although some have the date as May 20th, 1832 I would suspect that is wrong. My great grandfather donated and had the first memorial erected there and it is dated the 20th of May. Also I have copies of the original manuscript narrated by my great grandmother Rachel and her sister Sylvia in1867 also stating the 20th of May. I would imagine that would be a date they would not forget. Also several old newspaper articles, etc. with that date. I will continue to check back in at this site as I find the articles most interesting. Dora Munson Bauman

In the book, I set out to dispell the popular myth that a wayward and intoxicated band of militiamen were routed by a small contigent of Sac indians who were actually trying to surrender.

The facts do not support this poor theory, and the truth is that Stillman's command was acting under proper authority, had a line of communication with his own chain of command, being that of his commander (Whiteside), who in turned failed to properly support Stillman and his troops and wrongly laid the blame at Stillmans door step and smeared Stillmans name, as well as the reputation of the men under Stillmans command. I tried to show Stillman and his men for what they were, and not what for what they were perceived to be. The record shows very clearly that the failure for Stillman's defeat was not whiskey or even Stillman's lack of command. After all Stillman was with his men, Whiteside however was not with Stillman, and refused to move his troops even when directed to do so by higher authority. I said in the book and I will say it here, I find Whiteside's actions a severe failure of leadership and an act of cowardice. The other varibles were things such as lack of training and lack discipline. But clearly if Whiteside had deployed the situation would have been much different. In addition to this, I have read many accounts in which arbitrary numbers of indians who were present at the battle have been thrown out without any facts to support them, so I went through the record and looked at reports that were coming in from various sources, and that intelligence provided a much clearer picture of what was going on and the movements and actions of various indian tribes in the region and it appears that the numbers may have been far greater than popular myth portrays.

That's great! Thanks Larry. I am thrilled with any leads. I did some more digging on the Cholera plague and found that on July 4 1832 a steamer "arrived in Detriot with several companies of soldiers under the command of General Winfield Scott ". They were on route to the war but the Asiatic cholera had broken out on board and then the disease was spread onshore. Another site said the Irish immigrants brought the disease to New York City where it was passed to the troops. Also that "federal soldiers from the east were recruited " to fight in the Black Hawk war. So it is entirely possible that my Philadelphia Palmer was fighting or attempting to fight in this war. I would greatly appreciate anything you find on any Palmers in the war. I did run across a Capt Palmer but I doubt that was my Palmer. I have been unable to find his wifes' name or their marriage in the Philadelphia area , so I am really drawing straws with this soldier. Thanks again for the reply- Diane

General Atkinson with the regulars had gone down to Prairie Du Chien in the steamboat Warrior; the volunteers had marched down by land. Here they met Gen. Scott, who had been ordered from the East to take the chief command in this war. In eighteen days Gen. Scott had transported a regular force from Fortress Monroe on the Chesapeake Bay to Chicago. On their route up the lakes they were dreadfully afflicted with the Asiatic cholera, then a new and strange disease making its first appearance on the continent of America. It suddenly broke out among his troops at Detroit, about forty miles from which place two hundred and eight men were landed under the command of Colonel (now General) Twiggs, of whom it is said only nine survived. The main body under Gen. Scott came on to Chicago, but were attacked with the same disease at Mackinaw and by the time they arrived at Chicago the contagion was general; and within thirty days, ninety more were carried to their graves. Gen. Scott stayed at Chicago about a month, and reached the Mississippi at Rock Island some time in August 1832; but not until the decisive affair at the Bad Axe had terminated the war.

My guess is that is the soldier died of Cholera, he may have with Scotts troops and not militia, the records (to be found in Whitneys Black Hawk War) contain a lot of information on this subject.

I have a signed copy of this book from the author. I find it to be a really good guide for anyone who has an interest in the Black Hawk War. It has maps, locations, desriptions and other photos. This book would be great for someone who was following the Black Hawk Trail and doing research.

Well being the author, it would be unfair of me to post an honest review. But what I will say is that it is not the first thing that Ive had published, but it is the first book and I would have done it differently and I learned a lot working with the publisher. I'm happy that I had the opportunity to set the record straight, on the down side, the publisher gave me a limited window to make corrections and that resulted in some typos which upset me, but the context remained in tact. My next step in the process was to approach the Adjudants Office of the Illinois National Guard in an attempt to properly recognize those who died there. The bottom line is that they were members of the Illinois Militia who were activated by the governor and under command of federal authority when they were attacked.

Indiana Militia in the Black Hawk War based upon Land Warrants

First I will make some disclaimers. I am a novice in my knowledge of the Black Hawk War. My effort here is primarily to provide, with as few errors as possible, a short synopsis of Indiana's involvement and rosters of men from Indiana and their involvement in this war.
The information is arranged by rank, full name, Captain's last name, warrant number, date of issue, office of issue or no warrant found. A few men have two land warrant entries.

I will make no attempt to reconstruct Indiana's involvement, or lack thereof, in the Black Hawk War because of the numerous fine books that do just that. This information is primarily extracted from the Bureau of Land Records, http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/. This source provided the soldiers name, rank, his Captain's last name, the warrant number, the issue date and the office of issue. The states with military warrants that are currently included in this data base are Al., Ar., Fl., Ia., In., Il., La., Mi., Mn., Ms., Mo., Oh. and Wi. The Regiment number is from the "Indiana Source Book, Volume Three, edited by Willard Heiss, 1982." I use the spelling of the Land record, the warrant number and the date of issue to assist in looking up this record.

I utilized the names from the rosters provided by the Indiana Source book and searched the Bounty land warrants for a land warrant. In many cases the names are spelled differently and I use the spelling provided in the land records for easier lookup in the land records. The numbers on the right are the Officers, Non-Commissioned officers and privates that I have been able to connect to each commander. Some Indiana men enlisted in Illinois and Michigan companies. Some records reflect a different Captain than found in the land records. I have placed those men based upon the land record information.

A veteran or their survivors had to apply for a bounty land warrant, based upon service performed between 1775 and March 3, 1855, if the warrant was granted, it could be used to apply for a land patent. The land patent gave ownership of the free land. Bounty land warrants could also be transferred or sold to other individuals.

Apparently the first unit, of 50 men, in the field was commanded by a Captain Newell, of Warren County, when he received notice on May 21, 1832 that the Indians were at the Iroquois and approaching fast. Captain Newell found no evidence of Indian threat to Indiana and disbanded his men. (Esarey) (No land warrants for him or his unit have been found in the Bureau of Land Records data as of November 1, 2009.)

When Brigadier General Jacob Walker received his report, from Capt. Newell, of the Indian uprising, he requested that Governor Noah Noble call out the militia. The militia from Marion, Hendricks and Johnson Counties were called on May 31-or June 1, 1832 to include about 150 men. (Esarey)

Major General Joseph Orr received an order from the Indiana Governor, on May 27, 1832 to call a force together protect Indiana borders and it's citizens. This group of six companies were mustered on May 26 and 27, 1832 and attached to the 62nd Regiment commanded by Colonel James Davis. This was apparently the second group in the field. These six companies were disbanded on June 3, 1832 when they found no threat to Indiana. (Esarey)

Indiana Senator John Tipton after having heard the news of Black Hawk on the warpath, requested that congress authorize calling out the Militia. Congress passed the "Benton's bill" that instituted the United States Mounted Ranger Battalion on June 15, 1832. They approved six companies to serve one year. Each company was to have a Captain, 3 Lieutenants, 4 Non-Commissioned officers and 100 privates. The six Captains, of this fourt group, were appointed on June 15, 1832. Major Henry Dodge was selected to command the Battalion. The two companies of Indiana men were commanded by Benjamin Beckes/Beekes and Lemuel Ford

Benjamin Beekes/Beckes company was formed on July 28, 1832. He was of Vincennes County,
Indiana and although he had hurried to the frontier he was too late as Black Hawk had been
defeated on August 2, 1832. His company was soon disbanded because on July 7, 1833 while
stationed at Fort Winnebago the men stacked arms and left for their homes in Indiana.

Thanks for the heads-up on this book. The author has chose to carve off a specific subject from the Black Hawk War. Perhaps he was scared off from publishing an all encompassing book on the Black Hawk War due to Dr. Patrick J. Jung's June 26, 2008 statement on this message board. (Jung's book - The Black Hawk War of 1832, Univ of Oklahoma Press, 2007)

Jung said: "I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to consult Kerry Trask's book while finishing up my own book on the Black Hawk War. I found a few factual errors in Dr. Trask's book, but he saved me from committing a factual error or two myself, so I guess we can call it even. I think between our two books, that should be more than enough on the Black Hawk War for a while."

I must say; Wisconsin has become a hot bed of publishing Black Hawk War books. Two professors in the University of Wisconsin system and one at The Milwaukee School of Engineering. This is a good thing as it breathes fresh air into the old stale air of former publications dating back to John A. Wakefield's 1834 work.

Only time will tell if these recent publications become history classics or will they fall into the trash heap of drive-by journalism.

However, at the end of day...I always say: "one can not have too many books on the BHW."

Uncommon Defense
Indian Allies in the Black Hawk War

John W. Hall

The Black Hawk War of 1832 was a three-month conflict that resulted in the expulsion of the Sauk nation from Illinois. The war has often been viewed as a decisive victory by U.S. military forces, resulting in the seizure of Native American lands for white settlers. Hall revises that view by examining the military's native allies in the conflict, namely, the Dakota, Ho Chunk, Menominee, and Potawatomi, who saw the conflict as an opportunity to inflict harm on their traditional enemy, the Sauk. Thus, they allied themselves to the United States, using diplomatic protocols that dated to the arrival of the French and English in the Great Lakes region of North America. While the native warriors were looking to the past for established methods of accommodation to shape their relationship with the U.S. military, they unwittingly aided the United States in securing a future for Illinois that excluded all native peoples...[A] highly recommended work.
--John Burch, Library Journal

This exceptionally well-researched and elegantly written book is a must-read for those who want to understand better the history of the American frontier and the complexity of wars fought amongst indigenous peoples.... John Hall's compelling analysis of the U.S.-Indian diplomacy during the Black Hawk War is instructive as the United States and its allies confront tribal societies in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan while endeavoring to defeat transnational enemies and shape the course of local conflicts that predated our involvement there and are almost certain to continue long after we are gone.
--Brigadier General H.R. McMaster

Uncommon Defense shows that the conflict between Black Hawk and the United States was also an 'Indian war' in which Menominees, Dakotas, Ho Chunks, and Potawatomis sided with the Americans against the Sauks, and different tribes had their own agendas, strategies, and experiences. A refreshing look at a story we thought we knew well.
--Colin G. Calloway

John Hall's splendid book is a balanced and comprehensive account of the complex interrelations of the Indian tribes, Army, and settlers in the era of the Black Hawk War. Particularly significant is Hall's analysis of the reasons why the other tribes allied with the Army rather than Black Hawk.
--Edward M. Coffman

Far from the standard account, this sophisticated analysis of the Black Hawk War illustrates that the conflict was a many-sided affair with tribal people pursuing their own agendas. Well researched - engagingly written.
--R. David Edmunds
