Thanks to the ever-resourceful and hard-working Betsy Urven, vice-president of the Old Lead Region Historical Society, we have arranged for a special event on April 17-18 at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site! Entitled "The Black Hawk War Begins!" the OLRHS and his friends and associates will interpret some of the preparatory activities, discussions, and emotions surrounding word that Black Hawk and his band have re-crossed the Mississippi into Illinois! This segment of the conflict is rarely interpreted, so this should provide us with an interesting opportunity and several interpretive challenges! This is a special event, and as such is not listed on the LNS regular series of 2004 event offerings. Our thanks to the fine folks at Lincoln's New Salem for this opportunity! Members should contact either Betsy or myself by April 10, 2004 if they are planning on attending this event. Persons not otherwise affiliated with the OLRHS and desiring to attend as a costumed interpreter should contact me by April 10, 2004 for an invitation. You can either respond through this thread, send me a private message on this board, or email me. Bob Braun, Secretary, OLRHS.

Ok, so the board has been about dead for the last few weeks. Is this still on? Anyone out there?

We are still a go for New Salem. We need to get a count to let the site know and to plan for food. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are a for sure.

Laurel...
No Steve Merkel for this event... so we are down to four Brauns (no Mary) and Greg Carter. Also Rusty (see above.)
I also suspect Shorty, Brad Cliburne, and possibly Ray C. Breckenridge.
Greg... With Steve not going, a musket has been freed up for your use. Please bring your accouterment!
Regards, Bob.

I will have at least 2 boys attending and only 1 gun. If anyone has a gun we could borrow we could have an extra milita man. It looks like I might be in the market for another gun if anyone has a used one they want to get rid of. Remember I'm a struggling mother of 3!

Bob,
Thanks for holding a gun for me. I am going to be watching for UPS right up until Friday of the event and I am praying all the while that mine comes back because I am 4 months into waiting to shoot it for the first time!

Betsy --
I'll bring my Brown Bess as a spare. It's not as authentic as a 1795 but it ought to work out okay. Do I need to bring another cartridge box and bayonet belt too? The straps would be black instead of buff.

Also, forgot to mention Diane may be coming too. I know I'm going to try, but I'm not as sure about her availability. She might enjoy being at LNS when it's not 95 degrees for once.

More elements to be added...
More drill. Our purpose to to emphasize drill beyond the fun and pegentry of "militia muster." The added sense of urgency should fuel a modestly more serious tone to the drill. And we plan to do more drill at the event. Hopefully by Sunday we'll add some of the "light infantry" elements for the riflemen in the crowd...
These drill segments will be uniquely suited to folks who have little or no experience at it.
More activity. Our goal is to try to establish sevberal "mini-scenarios" all functioning at various points throughout the day-- from domestic chores and challenges, to readiness activities with the militia, to family issues, and so forth. Be creative (and educational to boot!) Of course, cards and dice will be ever on hand.
More intrigue. The word is that at least one New Salem fellow fanicies hisself better to officer the New Salem Company than thet Abe Lincoln fellow! He will be "Speechifying" on and off, attempting to secure votes with "whiskey" and tobacco!
We're quite sure that between these activities and the menu items currently being worked on, a FUN time will be had by all!
Bob.

This gets better and better!
Matt Kestel is going to be there too. I am bringing him myself, in cuffs if necessary, to ensure his arrival.

It sure would be nice to go and be a spectator. I've never been a big fan of historical military re-enactments. I've gone to at least two (that I can remember) and have enjoyed them, but I tell people that for me a little goes a long way. I'd rather be riding my bike to history sites. (The same with Native American powwow's.) However, I didn't know until I found this group that there are people who do re-enactments of pre-Civil War militias. Something like that I would make an extra effort to go to. I'm assuming spectators are welcome at these. Is that true? The timing is no good for this April one at New Salem, but I see that others are scheduled. My next question is this. If I would plan a bike ride to one of these, would there be such a thing as being allowed to camp, if I paid whatever fee? I would not be camping like 1830s militia people. The only claim to authenticity I could make is that I travel at a speed closer to theirs. My camping rig looks like this: www.iserv.net/~jgorentz/pix/Dscn1246d.jpgAre there places for people like that out on the edge somewhere, or do you pretty much limit it to the re-enactors.
