There isn't much known about him. Clack Stone may have migrated up from Wilson County, Tennessee, as he is named in court records dating from 1822 and earlier.

We do know that Stone and one John Winters secured a large tract of land, presumably for the purposes of digging lead, in the Apple River country of northwestern Illinois. The Apple River settlement had been digging lead since 1822... five years before the general lead "rush" ointo the region. The present-day town of Elizabeth is constructed on the Stone/Winters tract.

Stone was elected captain of his company, part of the Illinois Regiment in the region commanded by Col. Strode of Galena. This company served from May 25 until mustered out September 6, 1832. As luck would have it, only a portion of this company was present at Apple River Fort when the strongpoint came under attack in late June, 1832.

I just wanted to relate a brief note to all of you in light of the impending Memorial Day and also of the 170th anniversaries of the goings on of the Sauk War. OLRHS member Matt Kestel and I posted 19 flags at the graves of the casualties of the St. Vrain Massacre and Kellogg's Grove skirmish.

Despite the fact that the monument site, located near Kent, Illinois (Stephenson County), is a State Historic Site:

Before we placed the flags we spent 10 minutes pruning weeds and grass from the memorial.

After the weeds, we spent more time picking up broken glass, used prophylactics, beer cans and other trash from within the fence.

After that, we noticed that some ne'er-do-well stole another one of the bronze flag holders/veteran's markers.

The Kellogg's Grove site is in terrible disrepair. It's really a shame. Regardless, the flags are new, colorful, and in place.

Also I would like information about resources available concerning the Ill. Militia in the Blackhawk War. In particular I am looking for information about Lt. George Power and his brother Corporal Absalom Power. My sketchy info suggests that they served in a calvary unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 In reference to your inquiry, I find both George and Absalom serving in Duncans Brigade, second regiment, in the company of Capt. William F. Elkin. George was the 2nd Lt. of the unit and Absalom was a corpral and promoted to 1st. corporal on 19 June 1831. This was a volunteer company, during this conflict the volunteer units were all mounted, but not necessarily trained cavalry per se.

The Illinois State Library is sending me a copy of all laws published in Illinois up to 1832 relating to the Illinois Militia and also a copy of the 1818 Illinois State Constitution, which was in effect in 1832. Once I get them I will post more.

Hello. I recently found that a relative of ours, James Hall (Macoupin County) enlised on April 20, 1832, under a Captain Harris. He served until May 27, 1832 and was honorably discharged. In late 1936, one of our family members wrote a column about area history in which she stated that she still had a picture James Hall drew of the battlefield at Stillman's Run the day after the battle. Hello and welcome to the Black Hawk War discussion board! You are our 100th PARTICIPANT, and we are glad to have you!

As we seem to have consulted the same sources, i. e. Vol. 1 of Ellen Whitney's work, I regret that there is little more I can add to your inquiry at this point.

As for Lincoln's service with Mr. Hall, my only comment there is that the two men served in different companies and different regiments of the Illinois Volunteers. Your comments seem to indicate that Mr. Hall visited the battlefield of Stillman's Run shortly after the action... and any map he drew would be most interesting to the participants on this board!

Lincoln's company traditionally buried the dead of Stillman's Run... although this story has not yet been substantiated to my satisfaction (there is a third person narrative that suggests that Lincoln's men instead buried the dead of the fight at Kellogg's Grove.) It is possible for the two men to have met; how plausible it is would be another matter.

DJ, the short answer is "no."

The 1830s, as in most decades of history, saw a blending of male styles. This means that older styles worn by older folks were gradually replaced by newer styles worn by an increasing number of people. By the 1830s, waistcoats or vests with a so-called "shawl" collar had become prevalent, having supplanted the standing collar vests of the 18-teens and 1820s.

This is not to say that these latter vests dissappeared entirely; they did not. For example, the vest worn by Mr. Hall (an Indian Creek massacre victim) was of the earlier, standing collar style, and possibly modified somewhat prior to Mr. Hall's murder. (Older clothing "made-over" with later styling techniques are being found more and more, particularly with women's fashion.)

"Shawl collar" vests are amply represented in formal portraiture and genere paintings (Mount, Bingham, etc.) of the period.

Given the young age of most male emigrants to say the the Mineral District, the consensus is that newer-styled "shawl collar" vests would likely have been more represented than older styles (such as that worn by Hall.) Several examples of this shawl-collar wasitcoat style style are represented in the genre paintings of William Sydney Mount www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/mount_william_sidney.html and others.

Granted Mount's painting reflect Eastern clothing conventions in the 1830s, however there is evidence to suggest that clothing styles DID change, and that people in the Western country were more than willing to try to keep up with them.

This being said, I would also offer Bingham's genre paintings into the mix, as it appears that working men like boatmen on the Missouri did not wear waistcoats.. and the artists depicted them as such in numerous studies, sketches and paintings done in the 1830s and 1840s. IMHO, given certain circumstances and historical venues, a portrayer would not be incorrect to not wear a waistcoat-- an opinion for which I have been excoriated by a small segment of the reenacting community that insists on adhering to certain historical criteria and standards, despite the evidence.

I likewise got ripped for daring to suggest that men didn't ALWAYS wear neckcloths or other neckwear... but that's another story...
