Reportedly, a journal bearing the “mark” of a Winnebago guide travelling with Black Hawk and his British Band has surfaced.
Written in D'Nealian hand using a form of Gallotannate ink on ANSI “A” 100% cotton rag paper, saddle-bound with a cracked and worn leatherette cover, the text apparently reveals the thoughts and comments of Black Hawk as he retreated through present-day Wisconsin in the summer of 1832. At the heart of the manuscript is an allegation that General Henry Atkinson was content to disobey the direct orders of his superiors in Washington, and allow Black Hawk to quietly slip away from the army during the early days of July, 1832.
Apparently, CBS News had obtained the journal and reported on its stunning comments. Although some experts denounce the manuscript as an obvious modern fake, CBS News veteran Dan Rather told "60 Minutes II" viewers that people who have criticized "aspects of our story have never criticized the heart of it." Rather insisted that the "major thrust" of the journal is accurate— General Atkinson’s dereliction of duty caused President Jackson and Secretary Cass to remove him from command, and replace him with General Winfield Scott.

Media analyist L. Brent Bozell wrote on September 15: CBS News and anchorman Dan Rather have entered the journalistic equivalent of one of Dante’s circles of Hell, forced to live forever with a scandal they created. With their Texas Air National Guard forgeries, they now live in a neighborhood of national media embarrassments. Faked Food Lion resumes. Staged GM pickup truck explosions. Janet Cooke’s profile of Jimmy the eight-year-old coke addict. Jayson Blair’s phony travelogues from "West Virginia." [Don't forget to add the absurd fiction regarding the so-called lack of firearms in Colonial America, entitled "The Arming of America" --which I covered in another thread.] Watergate was a scandal Mr. Rather thoroughly enjoyed, since he built his career on ripping into Richard Nixon. Now Rather is Nixon, a bitter, vengeful man who allowed his friends to use dirty tricks against his political opponents and when caught, can only deny, deny, deny and bluster about the evil intentions of his enemies... Mr. Bozell concluded-- "The CBS story is a hoax and a fraud, and a cheap and sloppy one at that." But that's alright... because the STORY is supposed to be factual! Right. Just like the pleasant fiction reported to my high school sophomore son's class regarding the 1804 treaty that many claim sowed the seeds of the Black Hawk War. The "owtah collij 4 too yeers" U. S. History teacher proceeded to relay the story of the 1804 U. S. treaty delegation that got ol' Quashquami drunk so he'd sign the treaty. "Really?" inquired my well-meaning son, "I thought he changed his story so much that it was tough to tell what really went on." To which his collij-traned teacher replied-- "Gee, I guess I didn't know that. But I'm sure the essence of the story is true." Move over Dan Rather. Generation "Next" is ready to fill your chair. r.

Dan Rather, the CBS news anchor who made headlines this fall after using bogus documents to question President Bush's National Guard service, announced today he will leave his position with the network in March.
According to the Associated Press, Rather will step down on the 24th anniversary of his taking over the anchor chair of "CBS Evening News" from Walter Cronkite. Rather, 73, will continue as a correspondent for "60 Minutes" and "60 Minutes II."
Good riddance.
The only thing I want to hear Dan Rather say from now on is: "Ummm... do you want fries with that?"
Bob.
