We all know by now that Hurricane Katrina has wrought devistating havoc on the Gulf Shores. We also know that these desperate times reveal both the very best and the very worst in human nature.
I am not going to focus on the current blather being bantered about-- about the moralizing of some news commentators; the blame being pushed by a few politicians, global-warming theorists, one allegedly "bereved" wartime mother, or even the imbecilities offered by people like MSNBC's Keith Olbermann who on August 31 sought to defend and rationalized the looting in New Orleans.
Instead, I am reaching out to the readers of this forum and their families to find one way to help out during this great time of national emrgency.
Maybe you know a stricken Gulf Coast family or friend you can "adopt" until they are able to return home (debit cards, phone cards, gasoline cards, etc. are easily purchased and mailed.) Perhaps you could work with a local civic group (or organize your own!) to gather funds for the relief effort, and pass the money n to the Red Cross or other worthy relief organizations. Maybe you can volunteer at your local Red Cross chapter. Or write a check (in any denomination-- search your heart!) to the Red Cross or your local church's relief agency in care of the relief efforts.
Or even write a letter of encouragement and support to the relief agencies, local governments, etc. A kind word is always welcome!
Even one small effort can reap a great good. Please do whatever you can to aid our fellow Americans!
In support and solidarity with our neighbors on the Gulf Coast...
