We have so much knowledge of many of the weapons of the Sauk War period militia, but what about the hostiles in the area? What were their preferred or for that matter commonly used weapons during the conflict? GMC

Accounts mention muskets (probably trade guns), spears, tomahawks, war clubs, and knives.
BH's autobiography suggests that militia equipments and arms may well have been taken from the battlefield at "Stillman's Run." Other evidence indicates they may have taken American cartirdges as well, depite the fact that the .63 cal. ball in the standard "buck and ball" cartirdge was probably too large for the bores of most trade guns.

Greg,
Here are a couple people you might want to try and contact who could help you if you want to get real specific regarding types of equipment for Native Americans . I don't know whether they have access to the internet or not. One is Roger Gustafson, the former head of the Boone County Conservation District in Belvidere. I believe he lives on Appleton Road across from the District office and the other is Marshall Wolf who lives also in Belvidere. Both of these people have done research on Indian attire (mainly the Pottawatomie) but they are knowledgeable about the warclub, trade knife aspect. Another gentleman is Bob Swenson who I have corresponded with and seen at some 1812 events. He does an excellent Sac warrior. Bob is the caretaker of the cemetery in Ottumwa, Iowa. I have only written to him via snail mail so I don't know if he has e-mail either. Bob Blietz has talked to him as well, he talked to him at Mississinewa.

I think I have met Roger Gustafson. I believe he did some work for Burpee Museum when I worked there. I think I have his number, but if not I will talk to BCCD. Thanks.

Howdy, My name is John Santos. Living out here in Greenfield.MA. I have an interest in 18th/19th C frontier history. I am thinking about doing a Great Lakes area/Prairie Native portrayal. Looking for anyone that already does such a thing who could give me info on where to get trade shirts, clubs, knives, bows, etc. Someone mentioned that a fella named Mr. Swenson did a Sauk(Fox) impression. If someone could put me in contact with him, it would be much appreciated. Thanks
