As far as I can determine, Red Bird surrendered on or near the site of Fort Winnebago. Major Whistler had come down the Fox River from the council at Buttes des Morts and established a encampment along the river on highground.
He had with him, two companies of auxillery Indian forces, one made up of New York Indians, the other of Menominee. The description of the surrender by several eyewitnesses supports this. One I believe goes as far as noting that the chief had to be ferried across the Fox river to the army encampment.
There is an excellent account of the surrender by Thomas McKenney in Vol 5 of the Wisconsin Historical Collections titled "The Winnebago War." There is also a letter in the State Historical Society from John Kinzie, the future Indian Agent at the Portage, detailing the surrender.
There is a marker at the site as well. Just across the road from the surgeons quarters museum is a wayside. A small red granite marker notes the surrender.
