Thanks for the info. I've found that Frederick and William Niedringhaus visited Germany in 1874 and bought the process of coating cookware. The first piece of graniteware produced in the US was April 10, 1874. I'm still looking for a date it was first produced in Europe.

Could anyone head me in the right direction to find out the history of enamelware and graniteware? I think enamel started in Europe then migrated to the US but I haven't been able to find a definate date or country of origin. I believe that granite wear was patented in 1874 in the US but again I haven't found specifics. If someone could point me in the right direction I would be eternally gratefull. We have a civil war event coming up at Wade House end of this month and I need documentation to back up our guidelines.

I just finished the first two weeks of the new Summer History Day Camps at Wade House. Besides I was the program director for the camps. Following is a link to pictures of our first two weeks. I really think the camps are going well even if I do say so myself. I'm pretty proud of what we accomplished. Thanks for letting me blow my own horn for a minute. www.wisconsinhistory.org/wadehouse/day_camps/gallery/Betsy ;D

Did anyone by any chance happen to catch the show on the history channel last night questioning whether Lincoln was a racist and whether he actually wrote his Gettysburg address? I regret to say that I don't remember the gentleman's name who assered the views. Some of his premise was that Lincoln used the "n" word in his writings, that he advocated sending slaves back to Libereia thereby making America for whites only, and that the emmancipation proclaimation didn't free a single slave only the 13th ammendment did that. There were only scholars on the program that provided rebuttal in Lincoln's behalf. I'm sure this was a rebroadcast of an earlier show but it voiced a view I had never heard before. I find the whole idea extremely hard to swallow. Any thoughts?

Bob,
One of those days conflicts with the candle light tour at Garfield Farm we have been invited to participate in. I have a problem both days due to choir concerts I'm in at Marian. Is it to late to try for Nov. 20. I know you have a move coming up. January maybe better as things slow down after the holidays.

Ian, Rion and I will also be arriving on Friday. I'm assuming we will be able to stay in Herndons. We will be able to stay until mid afternoon on Sunday. Look forward to seeing everyone.

Bob,
I very much regret to inform you that I can not attend the Pendarvis event. That is the same weekend as Wade Houses Civil War Weekend and I have to work both days. I'm not happy about this but I'm sure you'll have a fine showing for the day.

This weekend was the annual Civil War Weekend at Wade House. On Monday we received an email from a family in North Dakota thanking us for an enjoyable experience. Of particular note was the young man who was great working with the kids at the family activity area. That young man was none other than Rion. This can be directly attributed to the work he has done with the Old Lead Region. No one else was singled out for praise. Once again we see that young people are an invaluable asset.

Jerry from Garfield Farm called and is interested in having us help with their candlelight tour Dec. 4 - 5. The tour runs 3 pm to 8 pm. If you are interested in attending please let me know as soon as possible so I can get back to him early next week. Thanks.

I would definately be interested. Just let me know where and when and what, even if it is just to add some period color. I may be able to bring a boy or two as well.

Whatever you gentlemen deem proper is great by me. I only raised the question because I know the age for the militia was 18 - 45. I know the boys would give anything to be part of the militia I was only trying to come up with an alternative if you felt that wasn't appropriate. Ian has not stopped talking about his experience at New Salem. I would still love to roll cartridges and distribute them if you feel that would add to our impression. Looking forward to seeing you all next weekend.

All three boys and I will be there. Since it may not be appropriate for the boys to be in the militia, (they're too young) what do you think of having them and me roll cartridges and distribute them to the men while the fighting is goins on? With permission they could also load weapons or at least load their own and hand them off for shooting. I've discussed this with Ian and Rion and they are aminable to the suggestion. Of course this would all be with Susan OK. It could lead to some great interpretation as well.
