After some clarification from the "Grant Birthday" committee, we are finally able to report on this event and the location of our Black Hawk War encampment!
First off... please note the event dates: April 12-13, and NOT Easter Weekend, as was first reported.
Second, the Galena/Jo Daviess County website information covering the BHW militia portion of the event is incorrect. Here's the correct information:
===============================
Event Summary
The "Black Hawk War militia encampment" will be at Grant Home Park— an Illinois Historical Preservation state property that includes a small cabin in a park setting literally cut out of hillside. The Old Lead Region Historical Society will present periodic interpretive activities, including militia drill and musket/rifle demonstrations from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
The OLRHS has been granted interpretive oversight for this segment of the event and for the duration of the event. Persons desiring to portray 1830s personna should contact the OLRHS by clicking on the email icon under my picture (to the left of this message) for an invitation.
Directions
Take Highway 20 west toward Galena. As you approach the outskirts of the city, you will pass Boggess St. and Bouthillier St., near “Bernadine Stillman’s Inn,” a large Victorian multi-story brick bed and breakfast. Take the very next right, into a large parking lot off U. S. 20 just after inn. This lot is generally used for bus parking for Grant Home visitation, so look for signs to that effect. Follow short trail to historic cabin; OLRHS will set up in vicinity of cabin.
A printable map may be found at www.granthome.com/
If you miss this turn, continue on Highway 20, past the Washburn House on right and turn right on Park Street BEFORE the bridge over the Galena River (if you cross the bridge you have gone too far!) Follow Park Street to Bouthillier St. and turn right. Drive up hill to Grant Home (on your left) and park in parking lot across the street from the home. Look for stairs on the parking lot side of the street that lead you down to Grant Home Park, below you.
Amenities
Firewood and straw provided; water and modern restroom facilities at Grant Home (located in an outbuilding behind the home.) OLRHS will provide two meals—breakfast and dinner. A $5 donation per person for the weekend cheerfully accepted to help defray meal expenses. Lunch on your own both days.
Interpretation
Interpretation should encompass refugee situation during Spring, 1832. Militia will portray an early Galena company forming under the general direction of Col. Strode. Impressions will be governed by OLRHS published interpretive guidelines. Non-OLRHS members desiring to participate as 1830s persons or militia are welcome, and will be expected to adhere to the guidelines.
