Lincoln's New Salem will be dedicating a statue during the first weekend in October. Along with this historic event, a militia muster and Saturday evening candlelight tour will be offered. Herdon's will again be available for our overnight and daytime use.
As you know from the website, we have been planning on this event for some time. Our good friend Don "Shorty" Ferricks writes:
For the first time in 35 years, a new statue of Abraham Lincoln will be unveiled at Lincoln's New Salem at 6:00 pm on Saturday, October 4.
The statue, "Abraham Lincoln: Deputy County Surveyor," was commissioned by the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association and shows a 25-year-old Lincoln peering through a surveyor's compass. Lincoln arrived in New Salem in 1831 at the age of 22 and lived there until 1837. While there, the county surveyor asked Lincoln to become a deputy county surveyor, even though Lincoln knew nothing about surveying. He worked in this position from 1833 to 1837. It is not known if Lincoln surveyed lots in New Salem, but he surveyed lots in the area. His original surveying equipment is on display at the Lincoln's New Salem Visitor Center.
The statue will be located at the entrance to the New Salem village between the Visitor Center and the souvenir shop.
In conjunction with this great occasion we will be holding a Militia Muster. We always have a camp set up for candlelight tour, but will expand this to some daytime activities such as musket demonstrations, drill, and maybe assisting the Surveyors that will be demonstrating in the village. Meals will be provided as always. I also hope to have us up front at the dedication as a Honor Guard.
Please check your calendars and make an extra effort to attend this event!
I have pre-registered those folks who I believe are going or who have already indicated a desire to go. Please contact me to double-check, or to register.
