The OLRHS will participate in the "Candlelight at the Inn" program at Garfield Farm, December 6, 2003 from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Please plan on arriving by 2:30 p.m. for orientation and any needed set-up. Rusty indicated a desire for our men to interpret the tap room. Permission has been granted! We will bring our cards, set up our faro bank, and warm up that checkers board! Brush up on your 1840s timeline of events! Impressions will be that of local men and travellers. For the ladies, Betsy has secured permission to use either the parlour --although it is very dark for sewing and other period crafts. Betsy also learned that we were more than welcome to play with the bee hive oven and do some hearth cooking the the other house (the big brown one). For more information and directions click here www.garfieldfarm.org/Should be a fun evening for all! ================= Postscript: Garfield Farm is on Garfield Road just north of Illinois Route 38 between Geneva and Elburn, Illinois. It is about 3 miles west of Randall Road, which is at the west edge of Geneva and St. Charles. From Illinois Route 38 turn north on Garfield Road and go about 1/4 mile to the Garfield Farm and Inn.

Many thanks to Garfield Farm, and to member Rusty Ayers for setting up this opportunity for us! Four hours of 1840s first person in the tavern room... accompanied by Rusty's animated reading from his 1846 newspaper (did those poor slaves ever make it to shore after that slaver was captured?) rounds of "Hazard" and "Bucking the Tiger," quids of chewing tobacco, bouts with our so-called "spittoon," and draughts of water laced with... water. A phenominal experience, and an excellent conclusion to our season with Garfield Farm! Kodos to Rusty, Greg Carter, and Ian Urven (who will never play Hazard again with us if he persists in WINNING!) And our thanks to Ms. Betsy, who cooked, baked and roasted up a storm in the kitchen! No doubt she's off spending Ian ill-gotten booty. Or is it ill booten gotty? ;D Everything was delicious Betsy... we can't wait for your cookbook to come out! Last but certainly not least... applause to Kirk Bunke and the Garfield Farm family. We always feel welcome there, and appreciated yet another opportunity to enjoy the farm! ADIOS! "Texas" Bob. ;D
