Greetings all!
The Fort Atkinson Rendezvous will be held May 21-23 (a departure from last year, as 2004 will have the event of the weekend BEFORE Memorial Day)
The OLRHS will be in the same location as years previous, at the northeast blockhouse and surrounding ground. We hope to manage camp set-up a little better at the fort, so that we're not squeezed out like last year.
Event will consist of refugee, camp and fort garrison activities-- drill, guard mount, musket and rifle firing demonstrations, and activities of daily living interpreted by our ladies and children. All OLRHS authenticity and interpretive standards will be in place.
Please bring a minimum 20 rounds of cartridges. More if you have it. Any use of a powder horn or flask MUST involve a powder measure. Powder-measured charges for rifles should not exceed 50 grains.
The blockhouse will be set up as in years previous, with straw ticks and full 1832 appointments to present a garrison impression. Please do bring your blanket, to supplement the blankets we do have.
Food will consist of simple breakfast fare (cornmeal mush, oatmeal, bacon, coffee) and one main meal each day... Saturday will most likely be chicken; and Sunday our now traditional pork loin-- all roasted on a spit over an open fire. These meals, accompanied by period side dishes and bread, will not leave you hungry!
NOTICE-- I will need help on Friday May 21 from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. to handle "School Day" at the event site. Normally, our Society handles traffic control and a portion of the interpretation at the fort during that day. My thanks to Betsy Urven and Greg Carter for graciously offering their assistance for that day. More help is encouraged and invited! You will be able to sleep overnight in the blockhouse if desired Thursday night. Coffee and a modest breakfast will be served that morning.
Directions to the fort site (No construction in Fort Atkinson this year!)--
From Milwaukee and North: Take I-94 to the Route 26/Johnson Creek exit. Take Route 26 south through Johnson's Creek and through the city of Jefferson. South of Jefferson, Route 26 becomes a bypass. Take the U. S. 12 exit and turn left on U. S. 12 (Nadison Ave.) towards Fort Atkinson. Go two stoplights to the intersection with Roberts Street. Turn right (south) on Roberts Street. At the next light, turn RIGHT (west) onto Route 106 (Riverside Drive.) If you cross the bridge, you've gon too far! Continue west on Route 106 for several blocks. After Wilson Street, take the next true right turn you can make-- which should be "Park Ave." or something like that. Once you turn right, you will see the fort to your right-front. Proceed to the next sharp turn in the road and go STRAIGHT, into a small parking lot behind the fort. Follow the foot trail that enters the fort from the west. Go past the cabin to the blockouse to the LEFT of the gate... that's us!
From Janesville and south-- From the interstate, take the "Route 26 North/Milton" exit. Follow Route 26 north through Milton. Continue north about 8 miles to Fort Atkinson. Route 26 becomes a by-pass. Go approximately two exits to the U. S. 12 exit and turn right towards the city. Follow as above.
