Back by popular demand, I will be hosting this year's edition of my Black Hawk War "Battles and Bastions" tour on October 22.
The tour will start PROMPTLY at 7:30 a.m. and run until around 5:30 to 6 p.m., depending on what folks want to see and the amount of time spent at various sites.
The morning of the tour, you may park your vehicle in a large municipal lot near the city's Little League park (I live right next door!) I will email participants directions to the park. Essentially, I drive the van and talk; you enjoy the ride, interract, and see first-hand some obscure and not so obscure Black Hawk War sites here in Wisconsin.
A partial itinerary includes: Wisconsin Heights battle field, Mound Fort, Fort Union, Fort Jackson, Fort at Diamond Grove, Mineral Point, Fort Defiance, Gratiot's Grove, fort at Gratiot's Grove, fort at Shullsburg, Spafford's Field, Spafford massacre obilesk, Fort Hamilton, Wiota, and "Bloody Lake," the site of the battle at "Horseshoe Bend."
There is no charge for the tour itself. I ask a $10 per person contribution for gasoline, which almost covers my petrol costs for the day (yes--- I and any family member along contribute the same amount!) Lunch is in Mineral Point, and is on your own-- but we usually stop for some great local pasties!
Dress for the weather, including sturdy walking shoes. I do the tour "rain or shine" so rain will not deter or cancel the tour. There is a bit of walking at Wisconsin Heights, including some steep inclines. Bring extra water if you require it. I will have a first aid kit along.
We currently have two open seats in our six seat van. Seats are filled on a "first-come, first-served basis." Please email or call me to reserve your seat.
We hope to see you October 22!
