I am sending this not to stir controversy but to ask for help. Indiana did send at least one regiment to fight in the Balck Hawk War Brenton's Co. 40,mounted riflemen, Indiana Militia. Does anyone have any information as to who they were assigned and where they may have fought if they fought at all. their service record shows June 1832 to July 1832. One month! Help! %20???

"Sarge," as you've probably already seen on this board, we don't shrink from controversy! And your questions are perfect for this sort of discussion board. I am aware of one company from Indiana (Orr's company) eventually posted on Hickory Creek west of Chicago ( see my post under Black Hawk War General Discussion in response to your query there); now whether or not this company was actually engaged as part of Atkinson's Army remains to be discovered. I suspect from the information in Orr's letter that Indian had raised at least one (now two, according to your information) companies of rangers for the defense of at least Indiana's western border and settlements. Like Indiana, Missouri raised several militia companies. I have not determined whether or not they activiely participated with Atkinson's army, or they were raised by the governor for border defense. Can anyone else help "Sarge?"

A review of Jacob Orr's battalion of Indiana troops and their activities during the 1832 conflict will be found in an upcoming OLRHS newsletter. Better subscribe now if you're not already! GMC
