I have just learned that the Revised Laws of Illinois made it clear that in 1832 Illinois instituted a $100 fine for anyone caught carrying “upon him any pistol, gun, knife, bludgeon, or other offensive weapon.”
This legislation apparently followed a trend seen in other states. As early as 1801, Tennessee lawmakers made it illegal for anyone to “publicly ride or go armed to the terror of the people, or privately carry any dirk, large knife, pistol, or any other dangerous weapon, to the fear or terror of any person.” Louisiana passed an act in 1813 outlawing the carrying of concealed firearms and allowed police officers to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying a concealed weapon.
