With all of the disussions we have had on this important and interesting character, I pose the question, is there a good modern biography on Henry Dodge? By modern I mean something written in the last 20 years or so.
If not it seems that it is high time one was written.

Peter... sorry I missed your query.
The answer is "no." The most recent bio appears to be William Salter's 1890 tome, The Life of Henry Dodge, from 1782 to 1833 : with Portrait by George Catlin and Maps of the Battles of the Pecatonica and Wisconsin Heights in the Black Hawk War published in Iowa.
And you are right. Given the ease and frivolity with which Dodge is regularly disparaged in academia and elsewhere, an up-to-date history is definately needed!

Since posting my original query I did find a reference to a bio on Dodge by a Louis Pelzer published by the Iowa State Historical Society in 1911. I plan on picking up a copy soon and checking it over.
I must admit Bob, our past discussions on Dodge really stirred my interest and I have been looking for any good writings on him.
I also have been on the hunt for documents written by the man and I have yet to find a "Dodge Papers" collection or something of the sort. There seems to be a scattering of his papers in other collections but no comprehensive collection of his stuff.
If anyone does try to do a Bio on him I think the task will be a daunting one indeed!
