Modern authors disagree about the size of the pony herd that accompanied Black Hawk, his "British Band," followers and allies. Some indicate that most of the band was on foot. We have noted in other threads that one native observer thought the band had 900 horses. When Henry and Dodge's express found Black Hawk's trail south of the Rock River Rapids, there was a large trail churned up, flanked by a pair of smaller trails. To me, this indicates a large body or horses.
Does any of the available evidence point to what might have been the size of the pony herd?
regards, Bob.
