When William Durley and several other couriers running dispatches from Galena to Dixon's Ferry were ambushed on the Galena Road near Buffalo Grove, Durley was killed. It is odd that the other riders turned back to Galena, when there was a tavern and home, still occupied by settlers (according to the Polo Historical Society), located not more than 500 yards from where Durley was shot.
