Approximately 3 weeks after the massacre at Indian Creek, Captain Sisson's company resolved to patrol the Holderman's Grove and Fox River Settlements.
As they approached Holderman's Grove, on the road between Ottawa and Marseilles, they were fired on by Potowatomi Indians. Privates Shermerhorn, Hazleton and Paine were killed. The rest of the company retreated and returned later to bury the bodies. When they arrived they found that Paine had been decapitated and his head stuck on a pole near the road. Paine had been a friend to the indians before the hostilities and it was surprising to find him in such a state.
I do not have an exact date of this action, but the caption above I found in The History of Will County, 1878.

Do you have an idea where Holdermans Grove is? If so that would be nice.

Holderman's Grove was very near to the Indian Creek Settlement. I don't have an exact mileage yet, but it was very close. I will post more on this shortly.

Holderman's grove was at the present day site of Newark Illinois, just east of the La Salle-Kendall County line. This is nine to ten miles ESE of the Indian Creek massacre site and is east of the Fox River. It is a goodly distance north of a line drawn between Ottawa and Marseilles down on the Illinois River.
