Cliff Krainik has given us a an interesting glimpse of 1827 frontier news and for that I am appreciative.
What struck me in the article was the reference to The great prophet.
What? What? Who is this prophet?
I know of three regional prophets who were alive at the time of this article.
1) Tenskwatawa - The Shawnee Prophet (Tecumseh's brother)
2) White Cloud or The Prophet (half Sauk - half Winnebago... joined Black Hawk's band in 1832)
3) Kanakuk or Kennekuk a Kickapoo prophet.
Many Pottawatomie in the Michigan Territory became the disciples of Kennekuk who preached against the consumption of alcohol and encouraged the people to apply peaceful resistance to American aggrandizement.
The disconnect with all three prophets and the Pottawatomie was this sentence in the article: The prophet, as is known, subsequently to this agreement, was taken off by poison.
Cliff, thanks again for bringing the frontier news of the day into my home.
