As part of a BHW sites tour for the leadership of the Rock County Civil War Round Table, I stopped at the Wisconsin Heights battlefield.
The site was apparently burned over this Spring, a long overdue event that aided greatly to reduce the amount of scrub brush... although not surprisingly much has come back!
The site's trails are generally well managed, virtually litter-free and the interpretive artwork is evident and generally free of vandalism. The site would benefit greatly from an interpretive brochure linked to numbered stakes that cover a variety of occurances during the July 21 battle.
The concrete monument has been defaced by a shotgun blast at close range. This damage makes the engraving difficult, but not impossible to read. This occured at some point between my last visit in November, 2002 and May 31. I wonder if was the arrogant bow-hunter, who threatened myself and a companion during the November visit, becasue we were making "too much noise?"
The afternoon of May 31 was perfect... mid 60s, and virtually no insects. In more than an hour of tramping, our party were the only visitors to the site.

As one of the Rock County Civil War Round Table Members who went on the trip in May I have to say the scene was in the best shape I had ever seen it. I returned there on Labor Day weekend and found it quite over grown. Some of the signs were difficult to locate the grass was so high. While it may have been more historically accurate it would be nicer if the trails could be cleared. Black Hawks viewing area was almost impossible to approach. Having been there several times in the past I could manage to get around but if I was there for the first time, there would have been no way I could have found anything of importance. I am new to the message board but has there ever been some discussions about volunteering to do some trail upkeep?

Hello, Pete, and welcome to the BHW discussion Board! In the past, several of us approached the DNR regarding volunteering to do such work at WH. Heck, I have a scout troop loaded with fellows needing service hours to achieve their next rank or merit badge. Unfortunatly the responses have been vague at best. With dwindling budgets, increased responsibilities, and a recent change in personnel, the time may again be ripe for a renewed query. Thanks again for your note. Bob.
