Recently, it was suggested to me that William S. Hamilton was not the fifth son of Alexander Hamilton.
According to the hamiltongensociety website, the lineage of Alexander Hamilton's family was as follows:
123. Alexander HAMILTON was born on 11 Jan 1755 in Charlestown, Nevis, British West Indies, Leeward Isles. He died on 12 Jul 1804 in New York, NY as a result of wounds suffered in the famous duel with Vice President Aaron Burr. He was buried in Tarrytown, NY. {First Secretary of the Treasury of the U.S.A.}
He was married to Elizabeth SCHUYLER in 1780 in NY. Elizabeth SCHUYLER was born on 17 Aug 1757 in NY. She died in 1854 in New York City, NY. Alexander HAMILTON and Elizabeth SCHUYLER had the following children:
247 i. Philip HAMILTON was born on 22 Jan 1782 in New York City, NY. He died on 24 Nov 1801 in Manhattan, NY.
248 ii. Angelica HAMILTON was born on 25 Sep 1784 in New York City, NY. She died on 6 Feb 1857 in New York City, NY.
+249 iii. Alexander HAMILTON Jr.
+250 iv. James Alexander HAMILTON.
+251 v. John Church HAMILTON.
252 vi. William Stephen HAMILTON was born on 4 Aug 1797 in New York City, NY. He died on 9 Oct 1850 in Sacramento, Sacramento Co., CA.
+253 vii. Eliza HAMILTON.
+254 viii. Phillip HAMILTON.
If this geneology is accurate, "Billy Hamilton was indeed the fifth son of Alexander Hamilton. Clearly he was not the "youngest" son, as a few authors have stated.
