Can anyone give me some directions to the Lincoln Log Cabin SHS? Since their website is still down and I need some shoes, I guess I will have to take matters into my own hands and go there.

The site is located about eight miles south of Charleston, Illinois. Another way to think about it is that it's an hour south of Champaign. If you want you can send me a message and let me know where you're coming from and I can give you directions.

Just call their gift shop -- they sell the shoes and boots there. I don't know the number off the top of my head but they're in Lerna, IL, area code 217. I bought a pair of their boots and they were excellent, but I had to return them because the tops were too tight for my manly calves.

Good advice Rusty. I intend to pick up a pair of their low quarters. Chris or anyone, do you have the phone number or if nothing else, their hours, so I can drop in?

The phone number is 217-345-1845. It is a good idea to phone first. From Galena it is about a 4 1/2 hour drive. If you do decide to drop in, remember that Illinois State Historic Sites are closed Monday and Tuesday.

Thanks, Chris. I think it is a blessing to have days off in the middle of the week now. I just hope they have some shoes lying about.
On that subject, can anyone give me an opinion on the "heel plates or not" argument? I realize that iron heel plates extend the shoe's lives, and I have heard from Jim Patton that the LLC shoes do not have them, so I am wondering if I should add a pair.

Why Mr. "Almanac"... some guidance on this subject may be found on p. 6 of the OLRHS' "Clothing and Equipage Guidelines for the Michigan Mounted Volunteer."
Under the sub-catagory of "Footwear" we find:
Wear plates were known and worn. In 1829, the April 11 edition of the Miners’ Journal newspaper in Galena carried an advertisement for “Titus,” a black runaway: “…his shoes had plates round the toes as well as the heels.”
The inference here is that the wear plates indicated in your post were both known and used in the Mineral District before the Sauk War. Happily, you get to choose what you wish to do... to use or not to use.

Chris... your query reminds me of a story... Everyone knows that after the attack on Apple River Fort, all that was left was hobnails. We know this because we have been informed that after Black Hawk's band raided the cabins and stole the clothing and furniture and broke up their dishes, people stood around in their drawers wondering what to do next. After that they slowly starved to death, because they had no delfware with which to eat their meals. Those that died were dumped in piles of salt and earth because noone knew how to build coffins. All that remained was this fellow named Hob who tried to nail some boards together. A local person exclaimed "Let me shew you Hob's nails" which today has been corrupted from the original Celtic upland low-German Scots-Irish gibberish to mean: Shoe hobnails. If THAT's what your'e looking for, start with www.najecki.com/repro/Shoes.html

Why Bob, aren't we a bunch of clowns! I do remember reading the piece on Titus. Just promise not to dump me in a mixture of dirt and salt for not remembering it!

Thanks Bob. Maybe someday we can have an event focusing on this folklore. I'll be putting on nails this winter on my Lincoln Log boots.

Almanac, October 5th and 6th is Lincoln Log's "Harvest Frolic and Trades Fair", which is its biggest event for the year. Zeno's will be there both days and a couple of my troupe members will be purchasing boots and shoes during the event. You may want to call and see if there will be someone to sell their boots during the event (I can't help but think that there will be). If so then we'll see you there. Be sure to stop by the stage and say howdy.

Chris,
I would love to go to the event, but I am afraid it is the same weekend at the 140th anniv. reenactment of the Battle of Perryville, and I will be stuck there. If you have time to scout out a nice pair of black low-quarters for me, I would be much in debt. Maybe I can stop there on the way home from Perryville, but I think the place will be closed by the time we leave the battlefield. I will go next year, though.
However, you telling me of the event is probably good, because now I can hold back some of my Perryville spending loot for some good shoes.

Last time I was there they had plenty of boots and shoes in storage. I don't think there will be a problem with you finding a pair. The site will probably be closed on the Sunday of the event at about 5pm. That is probably too late for you to stop by on your way from Perryville.
