For anyone interested in medicine and its practice during the 1830's, I recommend a visit to:
The UIC College of Medicine at Rockford 1601 Parkview Avenue Rockford, IL 61107-1897
The College of Medicine has a modest collection of medical instruments on display in the lobby, some dating from as far back as the late 1700's, including bleeding devices, invalid feeders, etc. For text references, the College's Crawford Medical Library contains over 200 historic texts in its Lucas Memorial Collection. Some of the texts date back to the Rennaissance Period. There are numerous references to the 1830's and the Civil War era as well, including a copy of the US Army Surgeon General's reports of 1865, including the autopsy record of Abraham Lincoln. There is no charge associated with viewing any of these items, and the reference librarians are often quite helpful. The College lobby is open from 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM daily, and the Library is open weekdays from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM and weekends from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
(And just as a side note, it is all protected by yours truly.)
