Gala Films, of Montreal Canada, is set to air its first episode of its series on native chiefs on September 15 on that paragon of historical accuracy--the HistoryChannel. The first installment covers the great Lakota leader Sitting Bull. www.galafilm.com/chiefs/htmlen/index.htmlOf interest to readers of this board will be an episode in the series covering Black Hawk. No air-date has been set as of this writing. The author of this series is one Brian McKenna.. a Canandian Broadcast Company associate who has been lambasted by fellow Canadians over some questionably researched and presented documentaries. One of the most salient was a CBC series on Canada's armed forces during World War I and II aired in early 1992. One of McKenna's episodes "The Valour and the Horror" raised serious doubts about the conduct of Canadian ground forces and bomber crews (particularly the latter) during the Normandy invasion. The episode received both praise from media reviewers and bitter condemnation from veteran's groups and some in academia. In the wake of mounting criticism, McKenna pronounced his research (and hence, his historical interpretation) "bulletproof"--- which brought a storm of additional protest from veterans groups. Since this board has already exposed several errors of fact found on the "Chiefs" website, (see our "Stillman's Run" and "Wisconsin Heights" threads) it should be very interesting viewing when the actual Black Hawk episode airs. You will be able to share your thoughts, comments, and insight on this board, as unfortunately the "Forum" portion of the "Chiefs" website remains inactive.

Well... it appears that Gala Films' much touted "Chiefs" series failed to air, or even advertise, on the promised date of September 15, 2002. The "Chiefs" website has not been updated recently. Both email and the discussion board remain inactivated. A link to the History Channel store is inactive. Further, a recent search for "Chiefs" on the History Channel website reveals nothing on this series. Could there be trouble in paradise?
