BLACK HAWK WAR ERA RELIC
Stone block from Fort Crawford found by local archaeologist during recent excavations for road improvement in Prairie du Chien.
Fort Crawford played an important role in the Black Hawk War by providing U.S. troops led by Colonel Zachary Taylor. The final event of the war occurred at Fort Crawford with Black Hawk’s surrender there on August 27, 1832.
Case 4 - MUSIC, JUVENILE LITERATURE, WHIMSY and RELICS
Black Hawk Waltz Composed by Mary E. Walsh and dedicated to P.H. Brown, Esq. U.S.N. First published in 1863, this music commemorates an event during the Civil War involving a Union gunboat named after the great Sac leader. Although it was the songwriter’s intention to honor the Union ship, the significance of the story became obscured and later publishers interpreted the title as referring to either a Native American or a bird. The music has been published for almost 140 years and is still being played today! Decorative sheet music, 1865-1930s.

BLACK HAWK WAR ERA RELIC
Hewn timber log from the "Galena Stockade." The wooden stockade was constructed in the spring of 1832 as a refuge anticipating an attack by Black Hawk’s band. This relic was obtained during the restoration of the Old Stockade Museum building, summer of 2000.
