I was reading with great interest the information posted on Capt. William S. Hamilton's Company. Among those listed were C. J. Hale, Washington Hale, and Stephen Eldred. Could Stephen Eldred be in error? There was a Stephen(Gibson)Hale, and a Eldred(Sylvester)Hale in the area at that time. These were all sons of William Hale, who was killed as a member of the St. Vrain party in May of 1832 in Illinois by the Blackhawk Indians. William Hale was my Great Great Grandfather.

Hello and welcome to the Black Hawk War Discussion Board! We're so pleased you joined us!
Yes... it is very possible that the company roster is in error. It was located in an 1880s county history, and sometimes there are errors (despite the best intentions of the authors.)
We rely on our readership-- professional and avocational historians, geneologists, decendants, and persons generally interested in the BHW -- to assist us in refining the information we present on the website.
Many thanks for your information. Do you think both Hales were old enough to have served in Hamilton's Company? Based on the info you have provided, we hope to update the roster of Billy Hamilton's company on the website in a few days.
Very cordially yours,
Bob Braun.

I read page 609 from The History of Lafayette County. I think there should have been a , between Stephen and Eldred. It should have read Stephen, Eldred, Washington, and CJ Hale. Ages of these people were; Stephen 32 years, Washington 20 years, Eldred 16 years, C. J. (Charles Jackson) 14 years. I think they all would be of age to be on the roster. Also Anthony Higginbotham could have been Alexander Higginbotham.

Agreed. We''ll modify the William Hamilton company roster on the website accordingly.
Based on my knowledge of militia laws, and the sometimes indifferent nature they were applied, age 14 still seems a little young to be serving in a company. We know that some young men served at age 17.
Regardless, we'll add Charles Jackson!
Thank you for some great info!
Bob.

Was William Hale also a member of William Hamilton's company? He was listed as a dispatch runner. He was the father of the Hale brothers who wew at the fort at that time. William was with Alexander Higginbotham and Aquilla Floyd, during the St. Vrain Massacre, and was killed. He was one of the early settlers, comming to the area in 1828.
