A recent trip through the northern Mineral District and Black Hawk War sites revealed a disturbing fact... land surrounding (meaning quite near) the quarter acre WHS plot for Mound Fort is up for sale. Heck, if memory serves, it's even zoned "commercial." That's great. We read in the most recent Sunday (Jan 4, 2004) edition of the Milwaukee Urinal-Sentinel that there are big doin's planned in 2004 for Aztelan... the prehisotric Indian village located just north of me. Visitor's center, improved trails, the whole smash... That's fine... except that Aztelan already has significant interpretive and visitor access assets. Sites like Mound Fort has virtually NOTHING--- except a largely inaccessable marker and the Dane Co. Historical Society metal marker a quarter mile away. One would think that the amount of time spent in archaeological studies, backed by Mr. Birmingham's excellent Journal article, might yield a higher level of interest than that currently exhibited by the Wisconsin Historical Society... or anyone else for that matter. Hello? HELLO? WHS... anyone home? Or are we just content to take another photograph for the files before this property, and the historic vistas it preserves is gone FOREVER? Bob.
