A historical account states : "The supposed Indian approached and proved to be Fred Dixon, indeed, an Indian trader and the very man of whom I had purchased my cabin. He was in command of some Potawatomi scouts at Shullsburg." The source for this account is Frederick Hollman's autobiography.
While on a Col Henry Dodge dispatch from Hamilton's Fort to Fort Union, Hollman crossed paths with Dixon.
I am entrigued by the fact there were several Indian Companies in the Black Hawk War and I am trying to discover more information about Dixon and his Potawatomi Indian scouts.
There was a Militia company garrisoned at Fort Independence near Shullsburg. It was lead by Captain Isaac Hamilton. Not only is there no muster roll record of a Fred Dixon in Hamilton's company, but he is not listed in any of the Michigan Territory muster rolls.
There is a Fred Dixon in the Illinois Militia Rolls who enlisted at Galena into James Stephenson's Company which was placed under Col Henry Dodge.
I am aware of two Potawatomi companies formed in this war but can not find a connection between them and Fred Dixon.
