Thanks for posting this Bob,
I have to admit I completely forgot about it, and its even on the SCHS website!!! Well I guess I can safely say that my once minor case of absent mindedness has blossomed into a full case of brain dead syndrome.
Though the article was printed in 2001, it actually was written in 2000, I have not read it for some time. I think I got a little overdramatic in a few parts.

Pete... your article inspired me to actually visit sites important to the last days of the BHW, which I was able to do just before and after a recent conference in La Crosse. I have wanted to do so for years, but a 3 hour one-way drive left litte "on station" time to actually investigate places. This time the opportunity was real, and welcome!
I recall seeing several of Dr. Porter's tablets quite by accident in 1989 during a visit to Prairie du Chein that evolved into a trip up Highway 35 to La Crosse. I nearly put the car into the ditch trying to stop in time for the "Batttle Hollow" marker. Back then, I was unable to do more than gawk at whatever could be seen from the roadside.
With this trip, I was able to drive, and in a few cases, walk the areas more comprehensively.
I will post my learnings in a seperate thread.
Why not submit an updated version of your site visit for the "Miners' Journal?" I can put in a good word for you with the editor! ;D
ADIOS! r.
