United States troops, pursuing the Sauk and Fox Indians during the Black Hawk War (1832), caught up with them on the banks of the Mississippi just below Bad Axe River. While the troops charged the Indians from the rear, a steamboat fired cannon at them from the front. The Indians were defeated. This brought the Black Hawk War to an end.
