"The west part of this line crosses the famous Badaxe battle ground, where Gen. Dodge with a body of militia (after pursuing the celebrated chief Black Hawk, with a number of Indians, squaws and papooses, over the mountainous Kickapoo country) overtook them in a starving condition while endeavoring to cross the Mississippi, and the militia murdered some of them while in this defenseless condition."
