The two predominat styles for the Regulars appears to be the plain brass plate and the Pattern of 1828 round eagle plate, struck in white semi-metal for the infantry and brass for the Artillery.
Examples of the Pattern of 1819 "U.S." plate have been found in archaeology done at Fort Snelling.
According to CMH sources, the instances of issue of the P. of 1828 plate appear to be spurratic at best. It seems the plate wasn't always accepted by some of the Regulars. Did they favor instead the plain brass plate... the use of which extended at least to the War of 1812?The plain brass plate shows up in archaeology stretching from Fort Atkinson, Nebraska to Seminole War sites.
