General Atkinson is a perennial target of persons looking for someone's doorstep at which to lay blame and find fault for the fumblings of the U. S. during the BHW. Gala Films, in their upcoming series "Chiefs" (to be released on the HistoryChannel this coming September) is no exception. Not content with legit criticism of the general, the series' creators appear to turn to outright fabrication: BiographyHenry Atkinson joined the U.S. Army in 1808. He served as a colonel in the War of 1812. He became a general in 1821. He led two exploratory expeditions to the Yellowstone River in 1819 and 1825.
Atkinson commanded part of the U.S. field forces that pursued the Sauk and Mesquakie during the summer of 1832. On August 2, Atkinson caught up to the bulk of Black Hawk's followers at the junction of the Bad Axe and Mississippi Rivers.
Black Hawk's people displayed the white flag of surrender but Atkinson ordered his men to fire upon them anyway. The ensuing massacre effectively ended all Sauk and Mesquakie resistance.
Atkinson supervised the removal of the Winnebago Nation to Iowa in 1838. He died in 1842. Source: www.galafilm.com/chiefs/htmlen/sauk/sp_atkinson.html
