In support of the US Government of Veterans Affairs branch office in Lancaster WI, I have compiled a list of persons buried in Grant County that are purported to have been in the militia or federal service during the Black Hawk War of 1831 - 1832. The Veterans Affairs office had 28 names in their database, Through other sources I was able to expand the list to 52 names.
All names were corroborated with the State of Illinois Black Hawk War Veterans data base and Michigan Territory Muster Rolls of Wisconsin State Historical Society. If a record was not found it could be due to mis-spelling, individual did not actually participate or individual was in Federal service. I did not research any Federal service records.
Three (Western) Michigan Territory Militia Captains rest beneath Grant County sod.
Captain Joseph H. Dixon Captain Glendower Morgan Price Captain John H. Rountree
My Excel spreadsheet list has 52 entries and indicates Rank, Company and cemetery location. Should anyone like a copy, please e-mail and I will send spreadsheet as an attachment.
