Jefferson County folklore indicates that several Finch brothers from Michigan came to what is now Jefferson County WI and volunteered in the militia. After the BHW they terrorized inhabitants of south-central Wisconsin. "They were a hard-driving, a hard-fisted, and a hard-riding crew. Mounted on fast horses, they descended on the prairie and woodland farms, driving before them the farmers' horses and cattle."
Research indicates that there were no Finchs' recorded in the Michigan (Western) Territory muster rolls, however there are three recorded in the Illinois volunteer muster rolls.
Thomas M., James G., and Nathaniel R. Finch were in a company headed up by Captain James Ferguson. The company was stationed at Gum's Fort on the Henderson River in Illinois. Time of service was 16 days.
Looking for additional information on the Finch clan.

Great story, Larry. Can you give us any more information about the "folk lore"? How did you learn 'bout the Finch brothers? Thanks for the posting.
