Indiana Militia in the Black Hawk War based upon Land Warrants
First I will make some disclaimers. I am a novice in my knowledge of the Black Hawk War. My effort here is primarily to provide, with as few errors as possible, a short synopsis of Indiana's involvement and rosters of men from Indiana and their involvement in this war.
The information is arranged by rank, full name, Captain's last name, warrant number, date of issue, office of issue or no warrant found. A few men have two land warrant entries.
I will make no attempt to reconstruct Indiana's involvement, or lack thereof, in the Black Hawk War because of the numerous fine books that do just that. This information is primarily extracted from the Bureau of Land Records, www.glorecords.blm.gov/. This source provided the soldiers name, rank, his Captain's last name, the warrant number, the issue date and the office of issue. The states with military warrants that are currently included in this data base are Al., Ar., Fl., Ia., In., Il., La., Mi., Mn., Ms., Mo., Oh. and Wi. The Regiment number is from the "Indiana Source Book, Volume Three, edited by Willard Heiss, 1982." I use the spelling of the Land record, the warrant number and the date of issue to assist in looking up this record.
I utilized the names from the rosters provided by the Indiana Source book and searched the Bounty land warrants for a land warrant. In many cases the names are spelled differently and I use the spelling provided in the land records for easier lookup in the land records. The numbers on the right are the Officers, Non-Commissioned officers and privates that I have been able to connect to each commander. Some Indiana men enlisted in Illinois and Michigan companies. Some records reflect a different Captain than found in the land records. I have placed those men based upon the land record information.
A veteran or their survivors had to apply for a bounty land warrant, based upon service performed between 1775 and March 3, 1855, if the warrant was granted, it could be used to apply for a land patent. The land patent gave ownership of the free land. Bounty land warrants could also be transferred or sold to other individuals.
Apparently the first unit, of 50 men, in the field was commanded by a Captain Newell, of Warren County, when he received notice on May 21, 1832 that the Indians were at the Iroquois and approaching fast. Captain Newell found no evidence of Indian threat to Indiana and disbanded his men. (Esarey) (No land warrants for him or his unit have been found in the Bureau of Land Records data as of November 1, 2009.)
When Brigadier General Jacob Walker received his report, from Capt. Newell, of the Indian uprising, he requested that Governor Noah Noble call out the militia. The militia from Marion, Hendricks and Johnson Counties were called on May 31-or June 1, 1832 to include about 150 men. (Esarey)
Major General Joseph Orr received an order from the Indiana Governor, on May 27, 1832 to call a force together protect Indiana borders and it's citizens. This group of six companies were mustered on May 26 and 27, 1832 and attached to the 62nd Regiment commanded by Colonel James Davis. This was apparently the second group in the field. These six companies were disbanded on June 3, 1832 when they found no threat to Indiana. (Esarey)

Indiana Senator John Tipton after having heard the news of Black Hawk on the warpath, requested that congress authorize calling out the Militia. Congress passed the "Benton's bill" that instituted the United States Mounted Ranger Battalion on June 15, 1832. They approved six companies to serve one year. Each company was to have a Captain, 3 Lieutenants, 4 Non-Commissioned officers and 100 privates. The six Captains, of this fourt group, were appointed on June 15, 1832. Major Henry Dodge was selected to command the Battalion. The two companies of Indiana men were commanded by Benjamin Beckes/Beekes and Lemuel Ford
Capt. Benjamin V Beckes/Beekes commanded a Battalion of United States Mounted Rangers
Benjamin Beekes/Beckes company was formed on July 28, 1832. He was of Vincennes County,
Indiana and although he had hurried to the frontier he was too late as Black Hawk had been
defeated on August 2, 1832. His company was soon disbanded because on July 7, 1833 while
stationed at Fort Winnebago the men stacked arms and left for their homes in Indiana.
