September 7 - 8, 2002 Rebuilding the Frontier Noon - 5:00 p.m. , 7 - 9 p.m. Saturday evening
It's September of 1832, the Black Hawk War is over and peace settles upon the prairie once again. Join the settlers at the Apple River Fort as they celebrate the end of the war. Men from the militia will be drilling and telling tales of the war. Itinerant trades people and skilled folk artisans will be at the fort selling their wares to the settlers as they rebuild after the war. On Saturday evening, relax and enjoy the candlelight and campfire as the Terrapin Ridge Ramblers play folk music and lead 1830s period dances.
The Old Lead Region Historical Society co-sponsors this event. Please check your calendars and plan on attending!

:DGreetings everyone! Just a quick update on the event at Apple River Fort on Sept. 7 & 8. Plans for the event are moving forward and we are nearly ready for everyone's arrival. We have mounted militia coming, and about a dozen folks from New Salem coming. Plus all of you! I can't wait to see everyone.
We also have a number of trades and artisans coming ranging from Blacksmiths, basketmakers, tinsmiths, fancy painters, milliners (kudos to Betsy), spinners, weavers, and the list goes on....
An added adventure on Saturday is a reunion of the volunteers who built the fort. They will be having dinner with us and we encourage them to stay for the evenings' entertainment including the Terrapin Ridge Ramblers folk music and a special appearance by Zeno's Carnival of Culture, a typical early 19th century traveling show. The volunteer reunion is to rekindle these volunteers' passion for the fort and the Black Hawk War.
AND... I just got word yesterday that a very special guest will be joining us as well. Maynard Crossland the new Executive Director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency will attend the reunion. I think this will be the first time he has seen the fort. Let's make it a great experience for everyone!
Let me know how many Old Lead Region folks will be attending! Thanks and we'll see you soon.
P.S. The evening meal will be a Roasted Hog with all the trimmings....

Well, it's only two days before the event and we already have a couple of people at the fort already (blacksmith and treenware maker)! I hope to see everyone there as this promises to be a great one. Bob, I've kept my eyes on the weather and it seems as though we won't be repeating last year's water buckets coming from the sky. See you all this weekend.

Whaa..? No rain? Forget it. If I'm not going to be wet at Apple River Fort, I'm not coming. Fondly, /s/ Hiram Smith Aroostook War, 1839.

The Aroostook War huh? I knew it would come to this. However, if it makes you feel any better rumor has it that Butch Baker will be here again this year. I'm pretty sure that Jerod will be here too but am not positive. I hope so. There will be plenty of material goods on hand. I Remain, Pvt. Johnson (On the hunt for Poncho Villa)

OK... I'm tempted.... ...but still not sold. No personal misery, no fun. Can't we at least crank the temperature and humiditiy up to 95, then run around in full kit for a flm crew for twelve hours? "No rain, no gain!" ;D William McNair Toledo War, 1835.

I'm sure there will be some misery. At least for the General who is walking on glass for our entertainment Saturday evening. As far as running around in full kit, I'm pretty sure the company Sgt. will keep that going. But wait . . . . maybe Sgt. can do some drilling after the hog roast. I'm sure that a little pork fat on the belly while you're running around would produce a little misery. ;D
